Children at a Palmerston North school have thrown their support behind a charity providing easier access to sporting equipment for people in need - Stuff

Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School held a donation day where they supported the Replay charity, which recycles used sports equipment and gives it a second life with children who may have difficulty affording or accessing sports gear.

The school collected 530 pieces of equipment or clothing, ranging from bike helmets, roller skates, moon hoppers, shoes, balls and a fencing mask.

There were 61 pairs of rugby boots and 51 hockey sticks.

The school’s sports leaders, including Julia Hutchinson, 12, and Joseph Steer, 12, organised a sport week before the end of term and asked classes to bring in sport gear.

“Some people must have empty garages,” Joseph said. “I brought in some hockey gear.”

Julia said they organised all the gear into the different codes and had mountains of rugby boots, shoes, hockey sticks, cricket bats and other items.

They were both happy with what they and their school-mates had done.

“We just thought there's people out there who can't play sport because price is a barrier,” Joseph said.

Replay’s Denise McLean was grateful for the work of the schoolchildren.
